The Civil Services in India refer to the administrative services that are responsible for the implementation of government policies and the smooth functioning of various public institutions. The Indian Civil Services (ICS), now known as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), is the premier administrative civil service of the Government of India and plays a crucial role in the administration and governance of the country. There are broadly 3 categories of civil services:

  • All India Services -- IAS, IPS, IFS
  • Central Services – Group A and Group B
  • State Civil Services 

 

In order to get into civil services, one has to clear a competitive exam Held either by UPSC or the State public service commissions of respective states. UPSC conducts the Civil Services Exam for 3 All India Services, 16 Group A central services, and 5 Group B central services.

IAS officers serve in various capacities across the federal and state governments. They are responsible for policy formulation and implementation, district administration, managing public funds, and ensuring the smooth functioning of government machinery. IAS officers have opportunities for career advancement, including promotions to higher administrative ranks, such as District Collector, Divisional Commissioner, Secretary to the Government of India, and even top positions like Chief Secretary and Cabinet Secretary. To pursue a career in civil services in India, individuals must qualify for the Civil Services Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or State Public Service Commissions of the respective states. Eligibility requirements for UPSC CSEinclude:
 

  • Nationality: Candidates must be Indian citizens.
  • Age limit: The minimum age requirement is 21 years, and the maximum age limit is 32 years. Age relaxation is provided for candidates belonging to specific categories.
  • Graduation: A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university is the minimum educational requirement. However, candidates with professional degrees such as engineering, medicine, or law often have an advantage.
  • UPSC Civil Services Examination: The UPSC conducts a three-stage examination process comprising a preliminary exam, a main exam, and a personal interview. The preliminary exam consists of objective-type questions, while the main exam involves subjective/paper-based tests on various subjects like language, general studies, and optional subjects.
