Eligibility

 

1. Educational Route to Become a Mountaineer 

Complete your 10+2 education. A background in physical education or related subjects can be beneficial but is not mandatory.

2. Mountaineering Courses

Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC)

  • Institutes:
    • Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling
    • Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi
    • Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIMWS), Pahalgam
    • Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali
  • Duration: 28-30 days
  • Content: Introduction to basic mountaineering techniques, equipment usage, rock climbing, ice climbing, and survival skills.

Advanced Mountaineering Course (AMC)

  • Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Basic Mountaineering Course.
  • Institutes: Same as for BMC.
  • Duration: 28-30 days
  • Content: Advanced techniques in rock and ice climbing, high-altitude survival, rescue techniques, and expedition planning.

Method of Instruction Course (MOI)

  • Prerequisite: Completion of AMC with good grades.
  • Institutes: Same as for BMC and AMC.
  • Duration: 21-28 days
  • Content: Teaching and instructional skills for aspiring mountain guides and instructors.

Search and Rescue (SAR) Course

  • Prerequisite: Completion of AMC.
  • Institutes: Same as above.
  • Duration: 14-21 days
  • Content: Specialized training in search and rescue operations in mountainous terrain.

3. Specialized Courses

  • Skiing Courses: Offered by institutes like HMI, NIM, and ABVIMAS.
  • Rock Climbing Courses: Focus on advanced rock climbing techniques.
  • High Altitude Trekking Courses: For those interested in high-altitude trekking and guiding.
